Formula for success to High Performance Health

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” Aristotle

Awareness = Action

Formula for success to High Performance Health

“You are what you eat.”
“You are only as good as your last meal and your next meal.”

These sayings are examples of phrases that are often heard in the world of athletic development. Simple quips that are meant to communicate the profound importance of nutrition in enhancing one’s health and performance.

The idea behind the aforementioned quotes as well as the myriad of other lines on healthy living is to convey, in easy to understand terms, the very essence of healthy living habits that form the foundation of optimizing one’s performance. Regardless of natural talent or the quality of one’s training program, if you eat poorly then you can expect to perform poorly as well.

However, unless you are aware of just how important nutrition is to your athletic success, you will never be fully able to address your own nutrition game and thus be your best. “You are what you eat” therefore serves as an easy way to remember why your eating habits are so important to your success. Such catch phrases serve to bring awareness to actions that are imperative to maximizing your potential.

The basic equation, awareness = action serves as the primary purpose of MAD’s High Performance Health (HPH) survey. Mandatory for all MAD students to complete prior to the start of every training session, the daily intake enquires about students nutrition, sleep, hydration, tech use and interaction with nature over the last 24 hours.

The idea behind the HPH is to make MAD students aware of the fundamental components necessary to attain optimal health and performance. The lower their score means the more work they need to do. With the ultimate goal to put themselves in the very best position to succeed, MAD’s HPH serves as a daily reminder to them to take the initiative: to be responsible and take an active role in their own health.

A high HPH score equates to preparing to be your best, to succeed. A low HPH score represents a lack of discipline, of commitment and means you are simply preparing to fail.

As we enter month four of the Corona pandemic, it’s been great to see MAD students HPH scores improve. With an average HPH score of 67% back in March to its current June standing of 91%, the MAD Crew is aware of their health and are taking action. From our Lincoln High School Boys Basketball group, to burgeoning pro hoopers Josh Fox and Andre Campbell to youngsters Caedon Hutcherson and the Cabading siblings, Dominique and Napoleon, they are all learning to take action on their health.

As Lincoln baller Antonio Pusateri says, “once you get used to filling it (the HPH survey) out, its easy! You just do it”
Awareness = Action….= Preparing to excel.
That’s a beautiful thing.
